Vent: After revisiting some vintage sci-fi anthologies, I got hit with this weird nostalgia for how straightforward alien encounters used to be.
I mean, idk, maybe it's just me but it feels like we've traded those clear-cut first contact stories for layers of political allegory that, while rich, sometimes lose that sense of wonder.

Yeah, been there... I keep a stack of Asimov or Clarke shorts by the bed for when modern sci-fi feels like homework. Skim a story before sleep... it's like a palette cleanser for the imagination.

Ah, that's exactly my routine with Bradbury stories.

Actually, clinging to those mid-century giants might be the real imagination killer. For every Bradbury story @alicejones revisits, there's a modern gem like Becky Chambers' "A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet" that offers warmth and wonder without feeling dated. Classic sci-fi can come with baggage, like outdated social views or prose that feels slow to a modern reader. Diving into current short fiction from magazines like "Clarkesworld" often delivers that same sense of awe but with concepts that speak directly to today. Isn't it better to train your brain on the new instead of always retreating to the past?
