Vent: The standard advice from insulation makers doesn't work in old homes

Their one-size-fits-all approach leads to gaps and cold spots. We need methods that adapt to existing structures.

How do you even begin to seal up a house that settles a different way each season? Modern advice assumes flat, square walls. Trying to force batts into a lath and plaster wall with years of bulges is a nightmare. And don't get me started on balloon framing creating invisible chimneys for cold air. You end up fighting the house's character instead of working with it.

Old houses really do have their own set of rules, don't they.
