Update: I read a study from the National Floor Covering Alliance that says 60% of DIY vinyl plank failures are from not checking the subfloor moisture first... which seems low.

I found that stat after a job where the homeowner showed me their failed attempt, and honestly I would have guessed closer to 90% based on what I see, so what's the main cause you all run into when fixing DIY messes?

Isn't the main cause usually not letting the planks acclimate first?

Actually, I've seen more floors fail from rushing the acclimation than from a bad install. That gap doesn't matter if the wood is still full of moisture from the warehouse.

Nah, acclimation gets too much blame. Most of the buckling I've seen comes from a bad install, like not leaving that gap around the edges. Planks can be sitting in the room for days and still warp if they're pinned down too tight. The real fix is letting the floor move like it's supposed to.
