Quick talk with a drywaller at lunch changed my view on prep work

I was grabbing a sandwich at the deli near the depot last Tuesday and sat next to this drywall finisher I'd seen around for years but never really talked to. He asked what I was working on and I started complaining about this big LVP job where the concrete had a bunch of low spots I had to patch. He just nodded and said 'you ever notice how the worst installs always trace back to bad prep? I spend half my day just taping and mudding right so the painter's job is easy.' It hit me different because I've always rushed through floor prep to get to the good part of laying the material. Last week I took his advice and spent a full extra hour on a 400 square foot room just making sure everything was flat and clean. The floor went down so smooth I barely had to use my knee kicker and the customer even commented on how quiet it was to walk on. Has anyone else had a similar moment where a guy from another trade gave you a tip that made you rethink your whole routine?

Ha, guess I've been skipping leg day on prep work my whole career.

Yeah I started setting out all my materials the night before and it saved me so much time in the morning. That one change made everything go smoother.
