Had to choose between a 3/8 inch gap and ripping out a whole subfloor yesterday
I went with the gap on a carpet install in a 1950s house in Denver because the homeowner said they'd rather have a small seam issue than pay for new plywood, and honestly it turned out fine but I'm still second-guessing myself - has anyone else taken the lazy route on a tricky job and it actually worked?

oh man I feel this in my soul. that 3/8 gap is basically a secret handshake between you and the homeowner, like hey we both know this isn't perfect but we're gonna pretend it is. I've done that dance so many times in old houses, gap filler and a prayer. as long as nobody runs their bare foot over that exact spot it's basically invisible, right? worst case scenario you get a noise complaint from the floorboards in ten years.

gap filler and a prayer" is basically my entire home renovation philosophy at this point. @jana119 you just summed up what my buddy went through last year with his 100 year old place in Portland. We called it the "trust me bro" gap. Still standing. Still silent. For now.
