Appreciation post: A homeowner in Phoenix showed me a trick with a utility knife

I was installing some vinyl plank in a kitchen last month, and the homeowner, an older guy, was watching me score a piece to snap it. He said, 'You know, if you heat the blade with a lighter for a few seconds, it cuts through that backing paper like butter.' I was skeptical, but I tried it. It worked perfectly and saved me a ton of time on the tricky cuts around the cabinets. I've been doing it on every LVP job since. Has anyone else picked up a simple trick from a customer that actually stuck?

Weird power move? I see it totally different. That homeowner probably paid for a lot of floors over the years and watched a lot of guys struggle. He wasn't trying to show you up, he was just trying to help get his own job done right. I'd be glad if someone saved me time on their own project, even if it stung a little to learn it from them.

Wait, so the guy paying you was giving you work tips? That's a weird power move, lol. Guess you gotta respect the old school hacks though, even if it comes with a side of humble pie. Next time he'll probably show you how to use the hammer you brought.

A client taught me to use soap on a saw blade, and it really does stop the wood from sticking.
