A homeowner in Boise asked me why I was cutting planks from the middle of the box first
I explained it helps blend color variations across the floor, and she said that made total sense but she'd never have guessed. Anyone else have a simple trick that customers are always surprised by?

That homeowner must think we just grab boards at random.

Funny how often the right way to do something looks strange if you don't know the reason. It's like that with a lot of trades. People see us doing something that seems odd or out of order, but there's always a practical reason behind it. They just don't have the years of experience that taught us why that step matters. It's a good reminder that skill isn't just about doing the work, it's about knowing all those little choices that make the final result better.

Lmao that's so true. I watched a guy once stare at a plumber like he was doing magic tricks just for using two wrenches at once. The look on his face was pure confusion like we were making it up as we went. Makes you wonder how many times people have quietly judged a pro for doing something "weird" that actually saves the whole job.
