Had to choose between a live band and a DJ for our Chicago launch party last month
We were planning this product launch event and the budget was tight... around $4k for entertainment. The band wanted $3,800 for a 4 hour set, DJ was $1,200. I went with the DJ because we could put the leftover money into better lighting and a photo booth. Turned out okay but I kinda wish we had the band. The DJ playlist got repetitive after 2 hours and people started drifting off. Has anyone else made this call and regretted it?

Watched a buddy's launch party in Austin last year where they booked a cheap DJ instead of a solid cover band. Same problem you had - after an hour the crowd was just standing around on their phones. The DJ was good but a playlist can't adjust to the room the way live musicians can. I read somewhere that live music keeps people engaged like 40% longer at events. Your lighting and photo booth probably helped but maybe next time try to find a smaller band that does 3 piece sets for under $2k.

I saw a study once that said live music triggers a stronger emotional response because of the unpredictability. People are wired to pay attention when they don't know exactly what's coming next, which is why a DJ set can feel flat after a while no matter how good the tracks are. Your buddy's three piece band idea is smart, especially if they can read the room and switch from background to dance floor energy as the night goes. Lighting definitely helps but it's hard to beat that human element of a musician feeding off the crowd.
