The divide between using a stylus versus a mouse for digital painting feels pretty clear to me now
I spent about six months doing all my digital art with just a mouse in Krita, mostly because I didn't want to drop $80 on a drawing tablet. I got decent at it, could do clean lines if I zoomed way in and took forever... but it always felt stiff and disconnected. Then last week I borrowed a friend's used Wacom Intuos for a weekend and tried the same piece over again. The brush strokes had way more flow, the pressure sensitivity added depth I didn't even know I was missing. Honestly, the mouse side feels like writing with a brick now, and the stylus side feels natural like pen and paper. But I know some people swear by mouses for precise linework in vector programs. Has anyone else made the switch and felt this strongly about one side over the other?

Just use the mouse to click "buy now" on a cheap tablet, problem solved... Seriously though, that feeling of going from mouse lines to actual brush strokes on a screen is like taking off a blindfold. I remember doing a whole fan art piece with a mouse once and my wrist hurt for three days. Never again.

Huh, I was one of those people who thought a mouse was fine for digital art. I did a whole series of comic panels with a cheap optical mouse and thought I was being clever saving money. Then I borrowed a friend's old Bamboo tablet for a weekend and literally redrew the same panel in ten minutes. It was like my hand finally spoke the same language as the screen. My wrist still thanks me for switching.

Did you find that the tablet changed how you approach composition and framing too, or was it more about the line quality? I remember when I switched, I got so caught up in the pressure sensitivity that I started doing these wobbly ink-style lines that I never would have attempted with a mouse. It really opened up a whole new set of tools in my head. It made me wonder how many beginners give up because they think the mouse is the only option and get frustrated.
