Serious question, is Procreate really that good or are people just hype?

Tbh I was super skeptical for like a year watching everyone rave about it, but I finally caved last month for my iPad and after 3 solid sessions I get it now. Has anyone else been shocked by how smooth it actually runs?

The hype is honestly just the hype for a lot of people who never tried any other drawing app. I've messed around with it and yeah, the brush engine is smooth, but it's not some life changing miracle tool. Half the people raving probably couldn't even tell you why it's better than like, Adobe Fresco or even Sketchbook. Plus the whole payment model thing is weird to me, like you buy it once and then they want you to pay extra for brushes and stuff. Feels like a way to get you hooked and then nickel and dime you for extras that used to just come with the app.

Also the whole "it just works" crowd never seems to mention that Procreate chokes on big canvas sizes or complex layers way faster than something like Clip Studio. I've seen people lose hours of work because the app crashed on an iPad Pro with plenty of memory left. And @wright.lisa nailed it about the payment model, it's like buying a car and then having to pay extra for the seats. Feels like they're riding the hype train so they can start charging subscription fees down the road once everyone's hooked. What do you think happens first, a subscription model or a big feature drop behind a paywall?
