Pro tip: The worst digital art showcase week I ever had taught me more than any good one

Last March I had a week where every single piece I uploaded got ignored. My Instagram post got 12 likes, my ArtStation got 3 views, and someone on DeviantArt actually commented 'this is mediocre at best'. It felt awful honestly. But then I realized those bad days forced me to look at my weak spots - my lighting was flat and my compositions were boring. I spent that whole weekend redoing one piece 4 times until it clicked. Has anyone else found that rough weeks actually pushed your skills forward faster than the good ones?

Oh man, that "mediocre at best" comment would've wrecked me too, but honestly sometimes the harsh stuff sticks better than the nice feedback. I've learned to actually screenshot those brutal comments and save them in a folder on my phone - not to cry over, but to look back at when I'm working on something new and think "okay what did that person actually mean?" It forces you to be real with yourself about your weak spots. What helped me was starting a little checklist before I post anything now - I go through lighting, composition, color palette, and ask myself if I'd actually be excited to see this in my own feed. That one bad week turned into a system that saves me from repeating the same mistakes.

Whoa wait, someone actually said "this is mediocre at best" to your face? That's brutal. I mean I've had people ignore my stuff or just give a thumbs up, but actual criticism like that? Man that stings. But you know what, you're right about those rough weeks teaching more than the good ones. I had a similar thing happen back in 2022 where I put up this landscape piece I was really proud of and it got like no traction anywhere. I was so mad about it at first but then I sat down and really looked at it and realized my color theory was all over the place. I ended up redoing the whole thing from scratch with a limited palette and it looked way better. Funny how that works.
