I spent 6 months over-sharpening my brushes before a friend in Portland set me straight
I used to crank up the sharpness on every brush to 100% thinking it made my art look more professional. Then a buddy who does concept art for a studio in Portland showed me his process where he keeps brushes at like 30-50% hardness to let colors blend naturally. Took me about 3 tries to get used to it but now my portraits have way more depth. Has anyone else realized they were overdoing a setting for years without knowing it?

I don't know man, it's not like you were ruining your paintings by using hard brushes. You were just getting a different look. Some illustrators use 100% hardness on purpose for that clean vector style. Seems like you just found a different technique that works for you but it's not like you were doing something wrong.

lol that reminds me of my friend who used a 100% hard round brush for like 3 years because he didn't know opacity did anything. his stuff looked like clip art but he was making bank doing logo designs. worked out for him I guess.
