A student's comment about my art completely reframed my process

I posted a digital painting of my local park in Portland to a showcase last month, and a user named 'Kai' commented that the light looked 'too perfect' and asked if I ever painted on cloudy days. I realized I'd been avoiding overcast scenes for years, thinking they were boring. Has anyone else had a simple observation from a viewer push them to try something totally different in their work?

Oh man, that hits home. I basically only took pictures of my kids in perfect sunshine for years. My whole photo album looks like a detergent ad, all harsh shadows and squinting. Maybe I should try a cloudy day.

That "too perfect" light comment is really interesting. It makes me wonder, what other basic assumptions do we make about what makes a subject "good" or "bad" to paint? Like, do you think you were chasing a certain kind of approval by only painting in ideal light?

Remember a friend painting a rusty drainpipe.
