Why does nobody talk about how airport security theater has gotten worse since 9/11?

I remember flying back in the late 90s and you could just walk up to your gate 20 minutes before boarding with no issues. Now you have to take off your shoes (still feels weird), pull out liquids in a baggie, and stand in line for 45 minutes while a TSA agent yells at people. I read a report last year that said the whole system costs like $8 billion a year and catches almost nothing serious. Has anyone here actually seen them find something that mattered?

Dude RIGHT. Last month at LAX they made me throw out a bottle of water I literally just bought past security.

The real scam is we pay for private security at malls but not airports.
