Tried the 5G chip theory with a radio I built, got static everywhere

Last month I put together a simple AM radio kit from a surplus shop in Tucson just to test the claim that 5G towers mess with everything. I drove to three different spots around town, one right next to a tower, and got the same buzzing static on every frequency. Took the radio apart twice to check for a bad solder joint, but it worked fine at my house. So either my build is solid or the towers aren't the interference source people say. Has anyone else actually tested this with their own gear, or just repeated what they saw online?

Asked my buddy Dave about this since he builds ham radios as a hobby. He drove out to a cell tower lot with his own setup and got the same kind of buzzing, but then he moved his antenna to the other side of his car and it cleared right up. Turns out the buzz was from his car's alternator, not the tower. He said the tower actually blocked some stations, but the static was all his own gear picking up engine noise.
