TIL my uncle's 'government weather machine' story almost got him kicked out of a family cookout

We were at my aunt's place in Tucson last summer, and he started telling everyone the drought was caused by a secret project. My cousin, who works for the National Weather Service, got really mad and showed him real data on her phone. It got so heated my aunt made him leave early before dessert. Has anyone else had a family fight over a wild theory like that?

Ever try just changing the subject? I started asking my uncle about his garden instead and it totally defused things lol.

Yeah, redirecting works so well. I once asked my aunt about her new puppy when things got tense, and suddenly everyone was talking about that instead. It's like hitting a reset button on the whole mood.

Totally get what you mean, @williams.kim. That reset button thing is so real. My family used to argue about politics every holiday until someone would just yell "who wants pie?" and the whole fight would just stop. It's like everyone was waiting for an excuse to talk about something nicer, like dessert or a puppy. You just have to find that one safe topic everyone can agree on. Works way better than trying to win the argument.
