Dropped $300 on a ghost hunting kit that found nothing but static

I got into the whole paranormal investigation thing after watching too many YouTube videos last fall. Bought this fancy kit with an EMF detector, spirit box, and thermal sensor for like $300 from an online shop. Spent two nights at the old Union Cemetery in Portland and all I got was a busted battery and a lot of wind noise. The spirit box just gave me random radio chatter, pretty sure I heard a weather report about Seattle. Anyone else waste their cash on this gear, or is there a cheaper way to get into this hobby that doesn't feel like a scam?
