A retired machinist's comment about 'they want you scared' got me thinking

I was at a car meet in Tulsa last month, and an older guy pointed at my new truck and said, 'They want you scared of the chip shortage so you'll pay sticker for this thing.' He had worked 35 years in a plant and watched them deliberately throttle production. It hit different because he wasn't selling anything, just stating a fact from the floor. Made me wonder how much of the 'supply chain crisis' was actually a pricing play. Has anyone else heard similar inside accounts from people who worked manufacturing?
