Showerthought: Starting with code was less scary when it was just you and a plain text editor.
Now new folks have to deal with so much extra stuff before they can even write a simple program.

Whoa, you could really just open Notepad and go for it? That sounds like a different world.

Actually, that's still pretty common for basic stuff. A lot of people still hand-code simple pages to really learn how it works.
