Showerthought: My kid's friend Jake said coding was just typing and it clicked for me.

He was over at my house last week, watching me fix a simple website bug, and said 'so it's just typing words?' I told him it's more like giving the computer a very clear list of steps, like telling someone how to build a birdhouse. We spent 20 minutes writing a tiny program that just printed his name 10 times, and his face lit up when it worked. What's a good first project for a 12 year old who thinks coding is boring?

Honestly, skip the project for a minute. That kid just solved a puzzle in his head and got the reward of seeing his name pop up. That's the hook. Don't kill it by making it homework. Next time he's over, just ask if he wants to make the computer do something else dumb, like count to a million super fast or make a text-based "choose your own adventure" where the hero is named Jake. Keep it silly and his idea.

Ask him what he'd like a computer to do for him.
