Just realized my first coding meetup in Austin was a total waste of time

I went to a 'beginner-friendly' Python night at a coffee shop last month, and the guy running it just talked about his own complex project for an hour. He used words I didn't know and didn't explain any of them. It felt like he was just showing off, not helping anyone learn. Has anyone else found a good way to spot a real beginner group before you go?

That sounds so annoying, sorry you had to sit through that. I've been to a few like that and it just kills the mood.

Ugh that sounds so frustrating, like why even call it beginner friendly? I had a similar thing happen at a web dev meetup where the speaker just showed off his fancy animations for an hour. What helped me was looking for groups that post their past meeting slides or code online first. If all their material looks way over your head, you can skip it and save the trip.

Yeah, I read that checking the group's past topics helps.
