The solar panel mount that flew off my roof at 3 AM
Last Tuesday during that big windstorm, I heard this awful banging noise from upstairs around 2:30 AM (night shift life means I'm usually awake anyway). Went outside with a flashlight and found one of my DIY solar panel brackets had completely snapped at the bolt - the panel was just dangling by its wiring. Ended up having to climb up there at 3 AM with zip ties and a ratchet strap just to keep it from taking out my neighbor's car. Has anyone else had those cheap aluminum brackets fail on them, or did I just get a bad batch from the hardware store?

Did you try the prayer method for fixing stuff?

Man yeah that's the thing with cheap hardware these days. Everything's made to barely get by, not actually last. I've noticed it with furniture, tools, even my car's plastic trim pieces - they save a penny on materials and make them just strong enough to survive the warranty period. Your bracket probably looked fine in the store but had a tiny flaw from the factory that nobody caught. The whole economy runs on stuff that's designed to fail eventually, and we're all just out here ratchet-strapping our lives back together at 3 AM.

Not sure if anyone else caught this, but that bracket snap might actually be from how you drilled the hole, not just the metal being cheap. If you didn't use a pilot bit and just sent a screw through, it can create microcracks around the hole that spread over time with vibration and wind load. Some of those hardware store brackets have a coating that hides stress fractures once they're already started too.
