That $300 heat pump install kit left me cold in a heatwave
My AC died during the 102 degree stretch in Phoenix last month, so I grabbed a DIY heat pump conversion kit to avoid paying an HVAC guy $1500. The compressor kept tripping the breaker after 6 hours of runtime, and the online support just told me to restart it, which fried the controller board on day two. Has anyone else gone the retrofit route and ended up doubting whether these kits are actually tested for residential use?

Consumer reports did a whole thing on those retrofit kits last year and found most of them skip basic stuff like load testing. Six hours before tripping sounds about right for one that wasn't matched to your actual system.
