Spent $1,800 on solar panels for my garage last spring and my electric bill barely moved
I put $1,800 into a small solar setup for my garage back in April, thinking I'd finally stop getting wrecked by summer AC bills. By August my bill had dropped maybe $12 a month, which means it'll take me about 12 years to break even if nothing breaks first. Did I just pick the wrong setup, or is this normal for a small system?
Man, I used to be all about solar panels and thought people who complained were just haters. Then my uncle got them installed and his bill went from like $180 to $165 and he paid $20k for the whole setup. I did the math one night and it would take him over 30 years to break even, and the panels might not even last that long. That really changed my mind on the whole thing, it only makes sense if you got money to burn or some crazy tax deal going on. Saving $15 a month is basically nothing when you dropped 2 grand, that's like 11 years just to get your money back.
