Showerthought: I realized my 'green' lawn was actually a huge water waste after seeing the bill jump $80 this summer.

I was watering my Kentucky bluegrass for an hour every other day until my neighbor, a retired botanist, pointed out that a single patch of clover uses 75% less water and helps the bees.

Ever think about how much that perfect lawn costs beyond the water bill? Like all the fertilizer and weed killer just to keep out the clover and dandelions. My dad used to spend every Saturday morning mowing and spraying, and for what? A boring green carpet that nothing useful can live in. Makes you wonder who decided that was the goal in the first place.

Totally get what you mean. I stopped fighting my yard a couple years ago and just let the clover take over. It stays green with way less water, the bees love it, and I never have to mow as often. I mean, it's not that perfect golf course look, but it's actually alive. Jana119, that article you mentioned probably talks about this stuff, right? It's crazy how much work we put into lawns just because someone decided they should look a certain way.
