Rental e-bike vs bus for 2 weeks, the grid told me everything
I needed to get around Austin for 14 days while my car was in the shop. The bus pass was $27.50, but the e-bike rental wanted $89 upfront plus per-minute fees. I went with the bus because I checked the city's live carbon tracker and buses were running at 82% passenger load that week. Turns out my stop got rerouted for construction on day 3, adding 40 minutes each way. Has anyone else had a transit plan fall apart because of last minute detours, or is it just my luck?
The load factor thing is what gets me here. You picked the bus partly because it was running at 82% capacity, which sounds efficient and green, but a packed bus is also the first one they cut stops from when construction hits. More riders means more chances somebody complains about the detour, so the city reroutes, and now your 30 minute ride is 70. The e-bike would've just gone around the cones. Not saying you made the wrong call on money, but the tracker told you the bus was popular, not that it was reliable. Those are two different things and the city kind of lets you figure that out the hard way.
