Overheard someone say their fridge uses 40% more power if the coils are dusty

I checked mine and they were caked with dust after just a year since I moved in here in Portland. Cleaned them with a vacuum brush attachment and now I'm curious if my electric bill will actually drop noticeably this month. Has anyone else tracked their savings after doing this?

You know, I used to roll my eyes at stuff like this. I figured it was just another internet myth that people latched onto to feel productive. Then I moved into an older rental here in St. Louis with a fridge that sounded like a lawnmower. I finally checked the coils and they were so caked with dust and cat hair I could barely see the metal underneath. Cleaned them with a shop vac, and it wasn't just the bill that dropped about 15 bucks the next month, the fridge actually stopped running every ten minutes. It was quieter, too. I'm a believer now.

Wait, isn't it the condenser coils, not just the fridge coils?
