My town's new composting pickup vs. my own backyard bin

Our city in Oregon started a curbside compost program last month for $8 extra on the utility bill. I had to choose between paying for that or just keeping my own backyard bin. I went with the city pickup because they take meat and dairy, which my bin can't handle. It's been three weeks and my trash bag is half the size, but I'm still not sure if the cost is worth it for a single person. Anyone else try a new service like this and have thoughts?

Honestly, that tiny trash bag is the best proof it's working, right? Tbh the meat and dairy thing is a huge deal, my backyard setup gets gross if I try that. I get the bill side eye though, eight bucks feels steep for one person. Does your city program take things like old paper towels or greasy pizza boxes too? That stuff adds up.

My neighbor's bin attracted a whole raccoon family last summer.

Did your city give you a tiny green bin too? My buddy in Portland got one and his main takeaway was the weird smell race between his kitchen collector and the weekly pickup. He said the real win was finally having a place for pizza boxes, but he still side eyes the bill every month.
