My rain barrel setup in Portland cracked open after the last freeze. Lost about 150 gallons.

Did you have it drained before the cold hit? I read that's the biggest mistake, because the ice has nowhere to expand but out. That's a rough loss of water to deal with.

My neighbor's pool cracked last winter and he lost 200 gallons. I used to skip draining but that changed my mind.
