My home energy audit in Portland last week showed a huge draft from my old fireplace.
The thermal camera picked up a cold spot I never noticed, so I'm getting a chimney balloon installed. Anyone have experience with those or other cheap fixes?

Just be careful those can trap moisture and cause other problems.

Ugh, is that why mine always end up feeling kind of gross after a while? I never put that together, but it makes total sense. I guess it just seals everything in too well. Thanks for the heads up, I'm definitely going to be more careful about how I use them now.

I read an article that said those balloons can sometimes get dislodged if you forget they're there and use the fireplace. The pressure from a fire would push it right out, so maybe put a big note on the mantel as a reminder. It's a good cheap fix if you're careful.
