Bought a $300 smart thermostat on a whim and actually saw savings in 2 months
I figured it was just a gimmick for tech bros, but my electric bill dropped $25 in January alone after letting it auto-adjust. Has anyone else had luck with one in an older house with bad insulation?

I mean $25 is nice but like, in a drafty old house that's basically a drop in the bucket, right? Even if it auto-adjusts you're still losing heat through single pane windows and whatever else is going on with the insulation. Idk, maybe I'm just cynical but I'd want to see if that savings holds up over a whole winter before getting too excited.

You know what, you're right to be skeptical. I had a buddy back in Cleveland who got all excited about a smart thermostat for his old Victorian with the single pane windows and all that. He swore it saved him like $30 the first month. Then we got a real cold snap in January and his bill went up $80 from the month before. He was ripping it off the wall by February. I think these things work better in a newer house with good windows and insulation, you know? It's like putting a bandaid on a broken leg sometimes. I wouldn't trust that first month savings either.
