Why does nobody talk about how long a Chicago parking permit actually takes?
When I moved to Logan Square back in 2019, I walked into the alderman's office and walked out with my sticker in maybe 20 minutes. This time around it took me 11 weeks. First the online portal kept saying my lease was not proof of address, so I mailed a copy of my utility bill. Two weeks later they said the bill was too old. I went in person, waited 90 minutes, and the guy told me the system had my old plate from my last car listed twice. Nobody explained that part. It felt like a whole different city from when I first moved here. Has anyone else dealt with the permit office lately, and did the duplicate plate thing happen to you too?
That duplicate plate thing is real, and it's usually the whole reason your permit gets stuck. When they moved everyone to the new online system, old records didn't get cleaned up, so your last car is still sitting there tied to your address. Ask them to pull your record by your name and address, not your plate, and have them delete the dead plates on the spot. Get the name of whoever fixes it and a ticket number if they give one, because otherwise you'll explain it all over again next time. Also skip the portal for the lease issue and bring a copy of your lease plus a bill that's less than 30 days old straight to the office. And stay on them every week or so, the squeaky wheel really does get the sticker.
