Moving truck quote came in $800 over my estimate, ugh

I was comparing full service movers for a Lincoln Park to Evanston move next month and got a quote that was $800 more than the estimator told me over the phone. Turns out they charge per stair flight over 3 steps and my building has 2 walk-up flights. Has anyone else gotten surprise stair fees here, or is that just standard for Chicago old buildings?

Moved back to the South Side after 3 years in the suburbs, feels different now

Last month my wife and I finally left Naperville and rented a two bedroom off 95th and Western, near where I grew up. I swear the old corner store on 93rd is gone and there's a new taco joint, but the train schedule is still the same mess it was back in 2019. We moved out there for my old job's parking lot, but now I work from home and we wanted to be closer to my mom who's getting older. Anyone else come back to a neighborhood that half changed and half didn't? How long did it take to feel like home again?

I finally realized my mistake with Chicago winter car prep

I moved here from Dallas last August and thought I had winter figured out. I kept my car in a garage, used all-season tires, and figured that was enough. Last January I got stuck on Lake Shore Drive for 45 minutes during that sudden squall near Belmont Harbor. A guy in a beat-up Subaru helped push me out and asked if I had winter tires. I laughed and said no, I had all-seasons. He just shook his head and said all-seasons are no-seasons in this city. I went to a tire shop in Lincoln Park the next day and spent $680 on a set of snow tires. The difference was insane, I could actually stop at red lights without sliding. Has anyone else made this same rookie mistake moving here from a warm state? What else am I missing that locals just know?

The parking spot trick newbies get backwards every time

I moved from Cleveland last March and kept hearing people say "just avoid the loop for parking," but that's wrong. I paid $38 to park near Millennium Park for a show and it took 45 minutes to get out, meanwhile there were tons of spots on side streets off Roosevelt for free after 6pm. The real tip is learning the permit zones, not avoiding downtown. I got a $65 ticket my second week because I didn't check the sign on Wabansia. Anyone else figure out street parking the hard way or have a secret zone that actually works?

The broker who told me to skip the inspection, 9 months later

My realtor in Logan Square swore the 2-flat we wanted was solid, said save the $450 and skip the home inspection. Found out last week the sewer line is cracked and the basement has a slow leak, now I'm looking at $6k in fixes before winter. Anyone else get talked out of an inspection and regret it?

Serious question, did anyone else think the Blue Line to O'Hare was way scarier than it actually is?

I moved here from a small town in Indiana last month, and everyone back home made it sound like taking the Blue Line alone after 8 PM was basically asking for trouble. My first real test was coming back from a show at the Aragon, and the train was just... normal. A few tired people, someone reading a book, nobody bothered me at all. Rant: I just realized I've been emptying my dehumidifier wrong for 2 years in my Lincoln Park basement

Moved into my place in Lincoln Park back in 2022. Basement gets musty every summer so I bought a dehumidifier. Been hauling that heavy bucket up the stairs and dumping it in the sink. Yesterday my buddy who's been here 10 years saw me doing it and goes "dude, just hook a garden hose to the back and run it to the floor drain." I didn't even know there was a hose port on this thing. Been making 20 trips a week for nothing. How did you all figure out stuff like this when you first moved to Chicago?

Moved here last Tuesday and parked my old Honda on one of those steep streets near Wicker Park. Came back to find it had rolled a good 15 feet and was leaning against a parked minivan. Anyone else have their car try to relocate itself when they first moved to this city?

Appreciation post: that move to Logan Square I was super skeptical about

Moved to Chicago 6 months ago from a small town in Indiana and everyone told me Logan Square was too far from the loop and too pricey. I was dead set on living in Lincoln Park or Lakeview cause thats what I kept hearing about online. But my cousin whos been here a decade pushed me hard to check out Logan Square and I finally gave in after she showed me the rent prices for a 1 bedroom. Ended up finding a place near the California blue line stop for $1200 a month which is way less than what I was seeing in the north side neighborhoods. The commute to my job in the West Loop takes me 25 minutes door to door which honestly is faster than what my buddy pays $1600 for in Wrigleyville. I was wrong about the area being too far or not having enough going on. The food scene is legit and I can walk to like 5 different breweries. Anyone else have a neighborhood they slept on but ended up loving after moving there?

I moved from Ohio back in January and thought I'd just swap plates at the DMV like normal. Turns out Illinois made me get a city sticker AND a residency proof letter, plus they lost my paperwork TWICE. Has anyone else dealt with the Secretary of State office taking forever for out of state transfers?

After 3 months of trying different places, I stopped into Dante's on Armitage last night and their thin crust was actually crispy all the way through, not soggy in the middle like every other place I have tried, has anyone else had trouble finding decent thin crust on the northwest side?

Moved to Ravenswood last October. Spent 3 weeks missing my train by 10 minutes every morning. Finally asked a coworker why the schedule was useless. Turns out the winter schedule starts in November with earlier times. Never saw a sign about it. Anyone else get burned by seasonal schedule changes?
