Warning: I picked the $1,450 Logan Square studio over the $1,100 one in Albany Park and my commute is killing me
When I moved here 4 months ago I had two real choices and I picked wrong, I'm pretty sure. Option A was a studio in Logan Square for $1,450 with the Blue Line basically outside my door. Option B was a bigger place in Albany Park for $1,100, but it was a 12 minute walk to the Brown Line and then I'd have to switch trains downtown. I went with Logan Square because everyone kept saying the Blue Line is the best line and how walkable the area is with all the bars and food spots. Here's the thing though, I work in the Loop near Jackson and my door to desk time is 34 minutes, which sounds fine, but the train is packed solid by Western and I've stood the whole ride almost every morning this month. My friend took the Albany Park place and she gets a seat like 4 out of 5 days, plus she's putting that extra $350 a month into savings. I keep telling myself the nightlife makes up for it but honestly I'm asleep by 10 most weeknights so what am I even paying for. Did anyone else face this Logan Square vs Albany Park type call, and if you picked the cheaper one farther out did you end up regretting it or not?
The line "I keep telling myself the nightlife makes up for it but honestly I'm asleep by 10 most weeknights" really hits, because I used to be the guy telling everyone the Blue Line and Logan Square were worth every penny. Then I actually did the math on my own life. My buddy lives way out by Kimball and pays $300 less, and when we grab dinner he's the one who's relaxed while I'm still wound up from standing shoulder to shoulder past Division. Four months in, you've basically paid an extra $1,400 for bars you don't go to and a seat you don't get. The seat thing alone would flip me now, no joke.
