Moved from Humboldt Park to Logan Square last month and the difference in grocery prices is insane

Used to spend $60 a week at the Cermak on Division for the same basics that now cost me $90 at the Mariano's on Milwaukee, so is the walkability premium actually worth it or am I just paying for the aesthetic?

Wait, hold up. Owens.cameron said Mariano's jacks up prices on purpose in gentrifying areas? That's wild if it's true. I just figured all those premium grocery chains had the same pricing no matter where they were at, like a set menu or something. So they're basically charging extra just because the neighborhood is getting more trendy and people can supposedly afford it? That feels kind of slimy honestly, charging people more for the same damn bread just because of the zip code.

You're reading into that wrong. Mariano's prices are already higher than Aldi or Walmart in any neighborhood, gentrifying or not. Their whole model is being a "premium" grocery store with the butcher and fancy cheese section, so of course the prices are going to be steeper. It's not some sneaky conspiracy to gouge people, it's just their standard pricing strategy across the board.
