Chose a $1,450 Edgewater studio over a $1,100 place in Pilsen and I'd make the same call again
When I moved here 14 months ago I had two places on the table: a bigger unit in Pilsen for $1,100 and a tiny studio near the lake in Edgewater for $1,450. Everyone told me to take Pilsen, save the cash, way more going on. I picked Edgewater anyway and my commute to the Loop is 35 minutes door to door, which is the whole reason I moved. My Pilsen friends spend an hour plus on the Pink Line every morning and complain about it constantly. If you're picking a neighborhood, is the train ride or the rent check the thing you'd actually regret?
Moved to Rogers Park two years back for the same reason, the Red Line straight down to the Loop beat saving a couple hundred in a neighborhood where I'd need a bus just to reach the train. Paying more hurt at first, but I've never once missed that extra cash the way I'd have missed two hours of my day. That daily grind adds up way faster than rent does. If your job is downtown and you're not remote, the commute is the thing you feel every single weekday, not the rent.
