Spent five years stressing about quarterly reviews until I saw a coworker's total lack of prep still get promoted

She just told them what she wanted and acted like it was fact, and after watching that I stopped writing 3-page brag sheets and started walking in with three bullet points, and my reviews actually got better has anyone else noticed the prep work is mostly theater?

The "mostly theater" part hit home for me. I read somewhere that performance reviews are basically a storytelling contest, not a data dump. Managers mostly want a quick, confident story they can remember and repeat to their boss. So three bullet points make total sense - it forces you to pick the strongest, most obvious wins instead of burying them in a pile of less important stuff.

And being forced to pick just three really makes you cut the fluff and own your actual best work.
