My boss told me 'quiet quitting' was a lie and it got me thinking

I was grabbing coffee with my manager Brenda last Tuesday and she said the whole quiet quitting thing is just people finally setting boundaries. She's been in HR for 15 years in Chicago and said she's watched folks burn out because they thought working 60 hour weeks was normal. It hit different because I've been guilty of that myself, taking on extra projects just to look good. Has anyone else had a boss flip the script on popular career advice like that?

Quiet quitting is just a fancy name for doing the bare minimum and calling it self care. Your boss Brenda sounds nice but she's been in HR too long and forgot that some people use "boundaries" as an excuse to coast while their coworkers pick up the slack. Half the people I've seen pushing this "quiet quitting" stuff are the same ones complaining they never get promoted or wonder why they're first on the layoff list. Setting boundaries is fine, but nobody owes you a paycheck for showing up and doing the absolute least.

Just do your job and don't overexplain it to anyone.

That reminds me of something my neighbor told me last week @jessica_ross38 - he tried explaining his new home security system to the installers and they just looked at him like he was speaking another language. Sometimes less really is more when it comes to talking about what you're doing.
