Manager told a new hire 'nobody here gets a raise without asking twice', and I've been replaying every review I sat through quietly
I was in the break room heating up soup a few days ago and heard my manager telling a guy who started a month ago that the trick is to ask for a raise, get told no, wait a bit, then ask again with numbers. She said it like it was common sense, right between talking about her dog and the parking lot repaving. I sat through 3 reviews at my last job over 4 years and never once pushed back on the 2 percent they handed me, because I figured that was just how it worked. Turns out the people around me who got real bumps were the ones who came back a second and third time, not the ones who worked hardest. I make $52k right now and I'm pretty sure a coworker who started after me is already past that just because he kept bugging them. So now I'm sitting here trying to figure out how to go back and reopen a conversation I basically closed myself. For people who have done this, how do you bring up money again without it being weird, do you just email your boss straight up or wait for review season?
That soup moment must have hit like a truck, hearing it laid out so casually like everyone already knew the rules but you. You didn't close anything permanently, a door you left shut is still a door, and people go back and ask all the time without it being a thing. Pick a normal week, not review season, and just email your boss asking for a quick chat about your pay, then show up with a number and a reason.
