A guy in my office said he turns down any job that won't train him, and I think he's costing himself thousands
I was microwaving my lunch in the break room on Tuesday and overheard this guy from accounting tell an intern he won't take a role unless the company pays for every cert he wants. Honestly that sounds nice, but I started at $16 an hour doing grunt work at a print shop in Tampa and learned Photoshop on my own time because nobody was going to hand me a class. Two years later that dumb self taught skill got me into a $52k design job. Waiting for a company to invest in you is basically waiting for someone else to care about your career more than you do. Has anyone actually gotten a big raise from an employer funded program, or is that mostly a story people tell?
Man, I read a survey somewhere that said most people who get a big pay bump do it by switching jobs, not by waiting on their current boss to pay for training. Something like 70 percent of raises come from moving companies. I knew a guy at my old warehouse who begged for months to get forklift certs paid for and they kept saying "next quarter." He finally just paid the 200 bucks himself, got the cert, and left for a better gig two months later. The company that wouldn't train him lost him for 200 dollars. Your coworker is basically betting his whole career on a company being nice, and companies are not nice.
