Vent: My apprentice said 'a clean drop is just for show' during a job in Boise last Tuesday.

He argued that since the customer never sees the attic, focusing on speed over neatness there is fine, but seeing his messy work later made me realize a clean install everywhere is about pride, not just inspection points, so how do you teach that mindset to new guys?

Oh man, that drives me nuts. I had a helper who thought the same way about crawl spaces. It's not about who sees it, it's about knowing you did the job right from top to bottom. That pride is what makes a real craftsman. I started showing my guys pictures of my own messy early work versus clean work now, and how the clean stuff just lasts better.

Spot on. Clean work just holds up better over time.

Ugh, my own attic work from '98 still haunts me, so I get it.
