Used to coil coax by hand. Now I use a figure-8 winder.

Spent 8 years wrapping cables around my elbow. Got carpal tunnel bad. Bought a $40 winder from a supply house near Philly last spring. Cuts my time in half and no more numb fingers. Anyone else switch and regret not doing it sooner?

The figure 8 is basically the same thing as hand coiling, just with a tool to save your joints. Hand coiling properly uses the same over under pattern that a figure 8 winder lays down. Lots of guys think the winder does something different but it just makes the motion easier on your body. Your elbow days were probably fine if you were doing the actual over under method right. The winder just keeps you from having to hold the cable up and twist your wrist a million times.

Heard one of the old linemen at the supply house say the same thing. Said hand coiling done right is already figure 8, you're just making your arm do all the work the tool does now.
