TIL a simple coax barrel connector can fix a whole house signal drop
Got a call in the West End neighborhood for a weak signal on every TV. The old line from the pole was fine, but the main splitter in the basement had a rusty input port. I swapped it for a new one, but the drop was still there. On a hunch, I put a fresh barrel connector between the ground block and the main line, and the signal jumped back to perfect levels in under a minute. Has anyone else had a bad barrel cause that much trouble?

Could a bad barrel also cause weird signal spikes sometimes?

Oh totally. Seen that before. A cracked barrel can let moisture in, messes with the insulation. You get these random jumps in the reading, like a ghost in the machine. Makes troubleshooting a real pain.

Wait, is a cracked barrel really that common though? I've been messing with these things for years and I honestly can't say I've ever seen one cause a problem like that. Maybe it's a specific brand or model thing, but in my experience most broken barrels just give you a dead short or no reading at all. The whole moisture getting in thing sounds plausible on paper, but I'd want to see some real evidence before blaming the barrel over something like a loose connector or a dirty pot. Your mileage may vary, but I've had way more issues with cheap solder joints causing random spikes than a cracked barrel ever did. Take this with a grain of salt, but I'd check the wiring first before tearing apart the sensor assembly.
