Question about running coax through old electrical conduit

Last Tuesday I was on a rewire job in a 1920s house in Cleveland and the homeowner asked me to run their new cable through an old abandoned electrical conduit in the basement. I spent 3 hours fighting with pull string and a fish tape only to have the coax get stuck halfway. Has anyone else tried this or is it just a dumb idea that should stay dead?

Oh man, I feel your pain on this one. I tried the exact same thing in an old house near Pittsburgh and it was a complete disaster. The conduit had some kind of sticky residue inside from the old wiring and the coax jacket just wouldn't slide no matter what I did. I eventually gave up and ran it along the outside of the basement ceiling instead, took me 20 minutes. You're not alone in learning this lesson the hard way, that's for sure.
