I know everyone says to avoid using a drill for fishing wire through insulation, but it saved a job for me in an old Chicago bungalow.
The fiberglass was so packed, my fish tape kept getting stuck, so I chucked a small nut onto a long flexible bit and gently spun it through. Anyone have a better trick for dense, old-wall insulation?

Oh man, that's a solid trick. I've been there with that packed, dusty insulation. Honestly, sometimes you just have to get creative and make your own tool for the job.

Grab a wire coat hanger and straighten it out. Use pliers to bend a small hook at one end. That little hook can pull out packed insulation from tight corners like nothing else. It saves your fingers from getting all cut up. I keep one in my tool bag just for that job now.

You know what my version of that tool was? A bent fork from my kitchen drawer. Worked great until my wife found it. @the_luna is totally right about getting creative, but my method just meant we ate salad with three forks for a month. I guess the real lesson is to check the junk drawer before you raid the good silverware.
