Had to pick between a D-ring and a mushroom anchor for a tricky wall in an old building yesterday

Did you flip a coin or just close your eyes and grab one? Because that's what I would've done with a tricky wall in an old building. D-rings are great until the plaster crumbles and you're left holding the anchor with a sad look on your face. Mushroom anchors are chunky but at least they bite into the mess better.

I went with the mushroom. Figured it matched my brain.

Gotta push back on that a little. Mushroom anchors are fine for brick or concrete, but in old crumbly plaster they can actually crack things worse since they expand so much. D-rings with a good toggle bolt might be the safer bet if you're dealing with iffy material.
