Got called out for my sloppy wall plate installs last month
A homeowner in Tempe pointed out my wall plates were always slightly crooked. Said it made the whole room feel off. I started carrying a small torpedo level in my bag. Now I check every single plate, even the ones in closets. Anyone else have a small habit that got fixed by customer feedback?

My old boss used to call my crooked outlets "modern art." The torpedo level was a real wake-up call.

Oh man, @andrew_rodriguez, I read somewhere that a crooked outlet is a dead giveaway of a DIY job. That torpedo level doesn't lie.

The "dead giveaway of a DIY job" line hits hard because it's true, but here's the thing nobody mentions. A crooked plate isn't just cosmetic. If the box behind it is slightly off level, that screw tension can actually crack drywall or pop the plate off over time. I learned that the hard way when I went back to fix one and found the whole box had shifted. I started using a level on the box itself before even putting the plate on. Now I catch problems before they turn into bigger ones.
