Caught my own old splice failing on a 14 year run

I was tracing a dead outlet in a high rise downtown last Tuesday and found a splice I put in back in 2011. The tape had cooked and cracked, connection was arcing green inside the box. What tipped me off was the faint buzzing when the HVAC kicked on, I always blamed the ballast. Now I strip back and recheck every splice in buildings with temp swings, that one was 14 floors up and too close to a steam riser. Anyone else revisit their old work and find something scary? What age do you start worrying?
