Vent: customers keep calling a pork butt a ham and I finally snapped at the counter
Had a lady at the shop last Thursday point at the pork shoulder in the case and ask for a half pound of ham, and when I said that cut comes off the leg she looked at me like I was lying to her face. This happens maybe 3 times a week at my counter in Akron, people see a big pink roast and the word ham just falls out of their mouth. They are two different muscles from two different ends of the animal and the cure is what turns one into ham, not the shape of the meat. I tried explaining it nice for years, then last week I just pulled a fresh leg out of the cooler and set them side by side so she could see it herself. She goes quiet for a sec, then says well they look the same to me, and honestly fair enough from where she was standing. Any of you got a short line that actually lands with folks, or do you just hand them the pork butt and let them figure it out at home?
