Went back to a bike I built 2 years ago and the cables were trashed

Took in a trade that I originally built up in 2022 and the housing was all crunchy and the shift cable had rust spots. Did the liners I used back then just suck or is 2 years about normal for daily riding in the PNW?

2 years in the PNW with daily riding... man that's rough but I'm not totally shocked. I had a set of Jagwire cables on my commuter that started feeling gritty after about 14 months and that was with regular cleaning and a bit of lube. The moisture and road grime just gets into everything out here, especially if you're riding in the rain a lot. Maybe try the sealed compressionless housing next time, I switched to that and my shift cables are still smooth after a year and a half.

Figured sealed cables were a gimmick for years but a buddy talked me into trying them last winter and honestly they've held up way better on my daily rider through all the rain. You tried the sealed stuff yet or still running standard housings?
